What I love the most about freelancing is the freedom to make good money when working on clients’ projects while having time to travel and work on my own projects – be it startup ideas, products, training courses, or books. I mentioned that in my previous post about freelance success.

Everyone who has ever considered the idea of going freelance has asked themselves what freelance success is. Those who have made the decision to become freelancers ask the question more often, especially when they enter the 2nd stage of the freelance cycle and start doubting everything they do. Some answer it and move forward, others quit. Even successful freelancers ask this question from time to time – usually when they reach a point in their life when changes are coming – starting a family, growing their family, wanting more time, or something else.
My hope is that today’s post will help you understand how relative the term ‘freelance success’ is; how it is all that you want it to be.
If you want to make any real progress in whatever it is that you do, you already know setting SMART goals is your first step. However, too many people fall short on actually achieving those goals because (they think) they lack time, fail to stay motivated, can’t visualize the benefits they would have once a goal is reached, etc.

Remember how we established you shouldn’t lower your prices for clients who promise you future work? Working for ages with the same client at a significantly lower rate than your market rates only because they hired you early on in your freelance career, isn’t a viable option either.
Here’s a quick break-down how misplaced loyalty can hurt you in the long run.
Learning how to handle rejection is paramount for your freelance success. When you are at the beginning of your freelance career, rejection will often come in the form of declined proposals or lack of response to your cover letters, not getting invited to interviews, and not landing the job after a great interview.
Don’t take it personally. A single YES makes it up for all the NOs along the way. But until you get it, it’s important you don’t give up; that you learn from the rejections and keep on trying.
